Chess Branching is run by an individual, not a company. This page explains, in plain language, what happens to your data when you use chessbranching.com.

The short version

What you create stays on your device

The chessboard, the move tree and the notes all run inside your browser. Your studies are saved using your browser’s local storage, which is a private area on your own computer or phone. They are not uploaded, not backed up by us, and not visible to us or to anyone else.

Practical consequences worth understanding:

• Your studies do not appear on your other devices or in a different browser.
• Clearing your browsing data deletes them, and we cannot restore them.
• Use the export PGN option to save a copy of anything you want to keep.

No accounts, and no analytics of our own

There is no sign-up, so we hold no email addresses, names, or passwords. We do not run our own analytics, tracking pixels, or visitor statistics.

Advertising

This site is supported by advertising served by Google, using Google AdSense. Google and its partners act independently of us and follow their own privacy practices.

• Google may use cookies or similar technologies to serve ads and to measure their performance.
• Third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this or other websites.
• You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendors’ use of cookies at aboutads.info/choices.

Where the law requires it, a consent prompt is shown before personalised advertising cookies are used, and you can change or withdraw that choice at any time.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical connection data such as IP addresses in order to deliver the page and to protect the service from abuse. We do not have access to an identifiable log of who visited.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect any information from them.

Your rights

Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing on our side to access, correct, or delete. The studies stored in your browser are entirely under your control: you can remove them by deleting a study inside the app, or by clearing site data in your browser settings. For anything related to advertising cookies, use the opt-out links above.

Changes

If this policy changes, the “last updated” date above will change with it. Significant changes will be noted on this page.
